A smelly shower drain may be caused by odour-causing bacteria that feed on the debris that accumulates in the drain. If your shower has a bad odour, try clearing your floor waste drain by removing build-up of gunk and cleaning with household bleach.
Remove the drain strainer
A thorough cleaning necessitates removing the drain strainer from the drain. A single Phillips screw is used to secure most shower strainers. You may have to pry the strainer up with a flat-head screwdriver after removing the screw using a screwdriver. Just pry off the strainer if you don’t find a screw.

Clean the strainer as well as the drain
After removing the strainer, you’ll find a thick coating of hair and scum on the bottom of the sink. Pull on rubber gloves and use a sponge and warm, soapy water or a mixture of disinfectant and water to remove the hair and gunk.
The same slime coats the drainpipe if you glance down it. Using your fingers, an old toothbrush, or a plastic drain cleaning tool with zippered teeth, wring out as much hair as you can from the area.
To clean the pipe, you may alternatively make use of a foam paint roller without the attachment. Turn it like a sponge as it soaks up soapy water in the sink. After many rounds of rinsing and cleaning, the roller should no longer take up any scum.
Disinfect or use chemical if necessary
A 50/50 mix of household bleach and water may be used to disinfect the drain, however this will cause the bleach to run down the drainpipe and may not kill all of the bacteria responsible for the stench. One cup of baking soda and a cup of white vinegar may be used instead. Afterward, flush the pipe with hot water to get rid of any remaining traces of the chemical reaction.
