How Pipe Relining Works: A Simple Guide to Modern Plumbing Solutions

If you are a homeowner or a business owner, you may be interested in an innovative solution that offers a less intrusive, faster and more cost-effective way to repair damaged pipes without the need for extensive excavation–Pipe Relining.

We have witnessed pipe relining emerge as a game-changer in modern plumbing in recent years. But how exactly does pipe relining work, and why is it becoming the go-to method for fixing pipes?

Read on as we walk you through the entire process, its benefits and why you should consider it for your next plumbing issue.

What is Pipe Relining?

Pipe relining is a trenchless technology used to repair cracked, broken or leaking pipes without having to dig up and replace the existing pipework.

Unlike traditional excavation, which requires digging up lawns, driveways, or floors, pipe relining involves inserting a new lining inside the damaged pipe, essentially creating a pipe within a pipe.

How It Works

The pipe relining process can be broken down into a few simple steps:

Inspection and Assessment

Our professional and experienced plumbers first use a high-tech CCTV camera to inspect the inside of the damaged pipe before any work is done.

This allows us to pinpoint the exact location/s and extent of the damage. The footage from this inspection helps us discuss with you whether pipe relining is the best solution for the problem.

Pipe Cleaning

Once we identify the damage, our next step is to clean the pipe thoroughly. We remove all debris, scales, or blockages using techniques such as high-pressure water jetting. We believe that a clean pipe is essential for an effective relining process.

Inserting the Liner

After cleaning, we insert a specially designed liner coated with an epoxy resin into the damaged section of the pipe. The liner is flexible and can easily navigate bends and curves in the existing pipe system. We then inflate the liner, pressing the epoxy resin firmly against the inner walls of the existing pipe.

Curing the Resin

With the liner in place, the resin needs time to cure and harden. Depending on the type of resin we use, this process can take several hours to a day.

Some methods use heat or UV light to speed up the curing process. Once cured, the result is a new, durable pipe that lines the interior of the old one.

Final Inspection

After the resin cures fully, we conduct a final CCTV inspection to ensure the relining is successful and the pipe is fully repaired. This ensures that the new lining is correctly installed, providing a smooth and efficient flow.

Benefits of Pipe Relining

  • No Need to Dig

One of the most significant advantages of pipe relining is that it’s trenchless, meaning there’s no need to dig up your yard, driveway, or floors. This makes the process much less disruptive and far more convenient, especially for homes with landscaped gardens or businesses with limited access to underground plumbing.

  • Cost-Effective

Since extensive excavation is not needed, labour and material costs are significantly reduced. While pipe relining may have a higher upfront cost than traditional repairs, the savings in time, labour, and property restoration make it more cost-effective in the long run.

  • Durability

The epoxy resin used in pipe relining is highly durable and resistant to corrosion, root intrusion, and leaks. Once cured, the relined pipe can last for 50 years or more, giving you peace of mind that your plumbing system is in good condition.

  • Environmentally Friendly

Pipe relining is a more environmentally friendly option because it avoids large-scale excavation and the replacement of materials. It reduces waste and minimises the impact on landscapes and ecosystems.

  • Improved Water Flow

After relining, the smooth surface of the new pipe improves water flow and reduces the chances of future blockages. In many cases, relining can even restore water pressure in homes or businesses with longstanding plumbing issues.

  • Wide Range of Applications

Our pipe relining services are versatile and can be used on various types of pipes, including sewer lines, stormwater drains, and internal plumbing systems. Whether you need a minor patch repair or a full relining of an old pipe, we’ve got the expertise to help.

  • Minimal Interruption

Pipe relining causes little to no disruption to your property or business. The process is fast, clean, and efficient, allowing your daily routine to continue without unnecessary delays.

When Should You Consider Pipe Relining?

Here are a few everyday situations where pipe relining is the best option:

  • Root Intrusion: Tree roots can invade pipes, causing blockages and breakages. Pipe relining can repair the damage and prevent future root intrusion.
  • Ageing Pipes: If your home has older pipes prone to leaks and corrosion, relining can reinforce them without the need for a complete replacement.
  • Cracked or Broken Pipes: Cracks and breaks, whether caused by ground movement, temperature changes, or general wear and tear, can be effectively repaired with relining.
  • Limited Access: In situations where digging is not feasible, such as under buildings, driveways, or roads, pipe relining is often the best solution.
